In just a few days, the world's largest international folk festival will kick off in the German city of Munich: Oktoberfest.
Oktoberfest is the largest beer festival in the world and is attended by more than six million people every year. But did you know it wasn't actually a beer festival at all? It is, in fact, an annual celebration of the marriage between Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Theresa of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Oktoberfest always begins at noon on the next Saturday after Sept. 15. In total Oktoberfest lasts 16 days but can also be extended to 18 days, this year it starts on Saturday, Sept. 21 and ends on Sunday, Oct. 6. On the grounds you can find several large beer tents, wine tents and a Biergarten. There is also a giant fairground, here there are more than 200 attractions.
Did you know ... a Biergarten is not the same as a beer tent? A Biergarten is an outdoor place where you can sit outside the beer tents. Biergarten are right next to the tents and you can go there if you can't get into the beer tents because of the crowds.
Most people who go to Oktoberfest wear traditional clothing called Trachten. During the party the men wear Lederhosen, these are three-quarter length pants that you fasten with suspenders, on top of this they wear a blouse. The men also wear a Tiroler hat with this. The women wear 'Dirndls' during the party these are usually colorful dresses, but there are also white dirndl dresses which you wear shorts over.

A number of rules also apply during Oktoberfest, for example there is a rule about the beer, only Oktoberfest beer brewed specifically for Oktoberfest may be served. The very first Oktoberfest was celebrated on Oct. 17, 1810, and lasted a total of five days. It was celebrated to celebrate the wedding of Princess Theresa of Saxe-Hildburghausen and Crown Prince Louis I of Bavaria. The royal newlyweds were married on Oct. 12, 1810, and to celebrate their marriage, a horse race was held on the Theresienwiese. A year later, everyone thought the celebration should take place again and it should be seen as a tradition. After two years of a successful celebration, the party failed in 1813, due to the Napoleonic Wars. The following years the feast was privately financed, but in 1819 the city of Munich took over the feast so that it could be celebrated every year without a few exceptions. The feast grew larger over the years and was eventually named ''Oktoberfest.'' The feast was also celebrated out of necessity. This was because southern Bavaria lacked clean drinking water. To prevent various diseases, people came up with the plan to make beer in its place. Because of this reason, Oktoberfest became a big beer festival and so people drink to their health.
