The word Halloween is derived from ''All Hallows Eve.'' This is the night before the Catholic feast of All Saints which falls on November 1, it is also called ''All Hallows Day.'' Halloween is originally an ancient Celtic celebration. Indeed, some 3,000 years ago, the Celts celebrated their New Year (Samhain) festival on that day.
Besides being fun to celebrate the New Year, it was also a very scary night for the Celts. For they believed that the dead revived from the graves to take the lives of the living Celts for the New Year. You could keep the spirits away from this by putting food in front of your door or by wearing a mask and chasing them away in this way. This was because they wanted to fool the spirits into believing that they, too, had risen from the dead like them and that they should therefore be left alone. Even though it was a scary night for the Celts, it remained a day of celebration besides that. They said goodbye to the past year and welcomed the new year. On this day, they always lit large fires called bonfires. It was lit to celebrate the party and at the same time to keep the spirits at bay. Nowadays, fortunately, Halloween is no longer about chasing away ghosts, but it is the night of the night: daylight saving time runs into winter time. This makes it dark earlier and this only works in favor of the horror festival Halloween. Halloween is all about children in costume collecting candy from doors and adults in spooky clothing enjoying a scary and exciting party together.
During Halloween, children and adults dress up in the scariest and most exciting costumes. Houses are also completely decorated with the spookiest decorations and ornaments. When it is dark the children who are dressed up go by the doors and when someone opens they shout ''trick or treat''. So you basically have a choice between your life or giving candy. If someone chooses trick, they are usually the victim of a little bullying.
This tradition is already exuberantly celebrated in America and is now increasingly coming over to Europe and thus also the Netherlands. In addition, more and more Halloween parties are organized where you can go to celebrate it together or people organize a costume party at home.
Halloween is celebrated extensively in the United States, Ireland, Canada and in the UK, but nowadays Halloween is also becoming more and more popular in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands you have more and more Halloween events, which you can visit with your friends, family or relatives. One of the biggest and most famous Halloween events in the Netherlands is Halloween Fright Nights in Walibi (Biddinghuizen). Decoration: this is of course one of the most important parts for the party. Make the place completely dark, dim the lights and light candles in different places. Halloween Fright Nights at Walibi is on the top spot as the biggest Halloween event in the Netherlands. The park is open during the many scary nights from 10:00 am to 11:00 pm, where from 6:00 pm the park is taken over by creeps with chainsaws, zombies, Eddie the clown and much more spectacle! The actors all run in different scare zones, each with a unique theme. In addition, you can also visit the Haunted Houses. You have 6 different Haunted Houses namely, Jefferson Manor, The Villa, Haunted Holidays, Psychoshock and the Clinic. The recommended age for Fright Nights is 16, but children under 16 will not be refused entry. The idea here is for everyone to come dressed up so that all of the park is taken over by Halloween.
For children under 12, there are also the Spooky days starting this year. This is not as scary as the Fright Nights, but exciting and challenging enough. It starts at 10:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm. After that, on the indicated days at 6 p.m. Fright Night begins, you can still choose to stay but remember it's going to be scary!

Amsterdam's biggest Halloween festival is the Amsterdam Halloween Monsterball. This year marks the 11th edition of the festival, which is held at the Westergasfabriek. It is held on Oct. 26 and is a very unique party, where everyone comes dressed up. This year's theme is ''A Japanese Horror Story.'' Therefore, the Japanese Kuchiska Onna, also known as the Slit-Mouthed Woman, will be invited. During this festival, there is also always a diverse DJ lineup presentzig. Last year, for example, Kriss Kross Amsterdam was the headline act. For this year, the lineup is still a surprise. The minimum age for the festival is 18 years.
The biggest Halloween festival in Rotterdam is the party: Crazy Sexy Cool Halloween. This event is organized on October 26 in the Zuiderpark and every year leaves visitors amazed, with special effects, creepy visuals and frightening decor.
